According to The World Health Organization, 153 million people have uncorrected refractive errors (near-sightedness, far-sightedness or astigmatism). Most of these vision impairments are quickly diagnosed and easy to treat with corrective lenses.
Still, millions of people in developing nations are pushed deeper into poverty simply because they don't have glasses. They can't learn, because reading is difficult. They can't work to the best of their ability, because they can't see clearly.
It costs Lions less than US$0.08 to provide a pair of recycled eyeglasses and change someone's life.
For children, clear vision means a better education, healthier development and a better quality of life. For adults, it means greater employment opportunity and economic strength. For seniors it means less dependence on others.
Lions clubs collect millions of eyeglasses each year, making eyeglass recycling one of our most popular activities. You can help.
Changing Lives, One Pair at a Time
In just about any dresser drawer, one can find a pair of eyeglasses that are no longer being used.
That same pair of eyeglasses can change another person's life.
Lions Recycle for Sight
That's why we started the Lions Recycle for Sight program. Everyone can help.
Throughout the year, Lions, Leos and other volunteers collect used eyeglasses and deliver them to regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers (LERCs). LERC volunteers clean, sort by prescription strength and package the glasses. Most of the recycled glasses are distributed to people in need in developing countries where they will have the greatest impact.
How You Can Help
If you have used eyeglasses you no longer need, you can donate them now. Lions accept prescription and reading glasses, sunglasses and plastic and metal frames. Children's glasses are especially needed. Here's how you can help.
Free for You – Priceless to Them
Imagine if you could help a child read. An adult succeed in his job. A senior maintain her independence. And provide a community with more opportunities to grow and thrive.
Everyday, our recycled eyeglass programs do all of this and more. Here's how you can help.
Drop Your Eyeglasses in Lions Collection Boxes
You can drop off your old eyewear at Lions-sponsored collection boxes in your community.
Our Lions Center offers a drop off box inside the Thrift store.
Lions Center is located at:
10346 Pennsylvania Ave
Bonita Springs Florida 34135
The Bonita Springs Lions Club would like to thank the community for supporting our Lions Recycle for Sight used eyeglasses collection program. Throughout the month of May, we collected more than 3,000 pairs of unwanted eyeglasses and sunglasses for those in need in developing countries.
The donated specs have been sent to our regional eyeglass recycling center where they will be cleaned, sorted by prescription and prepared for distribution by Lions and other groups.
By taking the time to give us your glasses, you have helped to improve the life of someone in need. In most developing nations, eye care is either unaffordable or inaccessible. And for many, poor eyesight that is left uncorrected can lead to unemployment for adults and a child's inability to attend school.
The Bonita Springs Lions Club would also like to express our appreciation to theThe Florida Lions Eye Bank for contributing to the project's success by serving as convenient drop-off centers.
People who did not get the chance to donate their glasses but would still like to, or those interested in learning more about other Bonita Springs Lions Club activities, can contact us for more information. Thanks again for sharing our vision of helping others to see.
Sincerely,
Bob Hilliard ( President )
Bonita Springs Lions Club
