Lions Eye Clinic Information & Services Provided

Lions Center 021
Introduction :

About five(5) Years ago, the Bonita Springs Lions Club elected to commit its substantial resources to the creation of an independent eye clinic for the medically indigent.

While the club has been a leader in funding eye care in Lee County and surrounding areas, this is an important expansion to its mission. The facility, which is housed on the campus of the Lions Club, provides comprehensive eye care examinations and therapeutic care for adults and children
who have no public or private health insurance and meet the Federal measure with income of <200% of the poverty level guideline.

The clinical and administrative staff is composed of experienced professionals including a retired Hospital President, a Board Certified Pediatric Ophthalmologist serving as Medical Director, and the
Chief Executive Officer with many years of broad management experience. The clinic is staffed by volunteer Ophthalmologists as well as Optometrists in conjunction with several private practice groups.

Eye Glass Recycling

lionsbannerglassrecycleAccording to The World Health Organization, 153 million people have uncorrected refractive errors (near-sightedness, far-sightedness or astigmatism). Most of these vision impairments are quickly diagnosed and easy to treat with corrective lenses.

Still, millions of people in developing nations are pushed deeper into poverty simply because they don't have glasses. They can't learn, because reading is difficult. They can't work to the best of their ability, because they can't see clearly.

It costs Lions less than US$0.08 to provide a pair of recycled eyeglasses and change someone's life.

For children, clear vision means a better education, healthier development and a better quality of life.  For adults, it means greater employment opportunity and economic strength. For seniors it means less dependence on others.

Lions clubs collect millions of eyeglasses each year, making eyeglass recycling one of our most popular activities. You can help.

Changing Lives, One Pair at a Time

In just about any dresser drawer, one can find a pair of eyeglasses that are no longer being used.
That same pair of eyeglasses can change another person's life.

Lions Recycle for Sight

That's why we started the Lions Recycle for Sight program. Everyone can help.

Throughout the year, Lions, Leos and other volunteers collect used eyeglasses and deliver them to regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers (LERCs). LERC volunteers clean, sort by prescription strength and package the glasses. Most of the recycled glasses are distributed to people in need in developing countries where they will have the greatest impact.

How You Can Help
If you have used eyeglasses you no longer need, you can donate them now. Lions accept prescription and reading glasses, sunglasses and plastic and metal frames. Children's glasses are especially needed. Here's how you can help.

Free for You – Priceless to Them
Imagine if you could help a child read. An adult succeed in his job. A senior maintain her independence. And provide a community with more opportunities to grow and thrive.
Everyday, our recycled eyeglass programs do all of this and more. Here's how you can help.

Florida Lions Eye Bank

Lions Eye BankThe Florida Lions Eye Bank was established in1962 as a non-profit organization to provide donor eye tissue to ophthalmologists for corneal transplantation.  Since then, nearly 40,000 people have received this precious Gift of Sight.  The Eye Bank also maintains a highly regarded pathology laboratory for studying eye disease and also provides resources and tissue for teaching and research.

How We Help In Research Efforts The Florida Lions Eye Bank provides both funding and critical eye tissue used in research at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute’s Biophysics Research Center at the William L. McKnight Vision Research Center.  The Eye Bank’s Ocular Pathology Laboratory also adds the base of medical knowledge while helping to train future ophthalmologists.  Over the years, the Eye Bank’s has participated in numerous breakthroughs in the areas of biophysics, molecular biosciences and biomedical technology, as well as the development and invention of numerous ophthalmic instruments.

Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research

EyeInstitute

We are leading the worldwide fight against blinding eye disease through our unique model — uniting the world’s largest Eye Bank, our cutting-edge Ocular Research Center, and our Foundation together to create the leading institution for ocular science. We are advocates for the 45 million blind and visually impaired people across the globe, and our mission is to improve their vision and quality of life, and ultimately end blindness.

Through the devotion of Lions Club members, the Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research was founded as an eye bank dedicated to the evaluation and distribution of eye tissue for transplantation. Over the past 30-plus years, our commitment has remained the same — an unwavering dedication to clinical excellence and a passion for providing care and service delivered with compassion and respect.

Since then, we have created a model unlike anything ever realized before; we are the first and only combined eye bank and ocular research center in the world — empowering researchers to conduct real-time studies of healthy and diseased ocular tissue leading to a greater understanding of the events that lead to blindness.

As a nonprofit, we are grounded in the belief that everyone deserves the gift of sight, and the Foundation was established for that purpose. We humbly donate over $1 million of our services annually and give thousands of dollars to help improve vision internationally. We work to educate and inspire communities about ocular research as well as host and fund special events to help people understand that blindness is something everyone faces. Our dream will be realized when everyone — those affected by eye disease, as well as those with healthy eyes — fully appreciates and values the gift of sight.
