Issue # One   July 2011

July Newsletter

Wow, how time flies! When you receive this, Lion Judy and I will be in

Seattle, meeting great Lions and learning even more about Lions than

I have learned over many years of serving. What an honor and I could

not be more proud for us to represent District 35-ONE!

During 2011-2012, I, as your DG, will be encouraging each one of you

Lions to follow the "I Believe" International program, to believe in and

take action to strengthen our membership by caring for fellow members

as if they are family by:

Maximizing the use of our GMT TEAM!

Increasing the number of clubs. We currently have 55. We lost 7.

Have all clubs gain a minimum of 2 members giving us an increase of 110, resulting in a net growth of 50+ Lions (minus the moves and deaths). We currently have 1478 members. Males - 880, Females - 598.

Have every club below 20 members bring membership up to 20 members.

Increase Family Membership in clubs - Enact a "My Club, My Family"

philosophy.

Increase Family units in clubs. We currently have 182 with 194 paying half dues.

Increase women membership in clubs. We currently have 598, that is 282 less than men.

Every new Lion will go thru a District Orientation Program by Lion Bob Fulks at Cabinet Meetings.

All clubs will do a exit interview of why Lions leave their club. Our

Retention Chair Lion Bob Woomer, PDG, will be monitoring this and

will get a copy from clubs dropping members.

We will believe and succeed in expanding our service to new heights,

propelled by a special campaign to plant one million trees.

We will believe in nurturing our future by involving more young people and Leos in all that we do.

Believe that one person can make a difference.

Believe that the entire world can be changed when we come together as Lions.

Believe that changing a life - or the world - starts with each one of us.

In this 2011-2012 Lions year, we will also:

  • Increase and improve communication between individual Lions,  the Clubs and the District by our Cabinet Secretary Lion Norma Jean Andrews, PDG, our District newsletter by Lion Cathy Walton, PDG

  • Increase socail networking by Clubs and the District not only have websites, but also Facebook pages by our ITW Chair David Skillin

  • Have increase of 10% in the Peace Poster contest by Lion Amy    Hilliard, PIS

  • We will have a Crusader winner from District I by Lions Bev Kruger and David Skillin

  • We will have a Pilot winner from District I by Lion Suzy Stathus, CC

  • Participate in the Global Service Action Campaigns

Engage our Youth in August

Share the vision in October

Relieve hunger in December and January

Protect our Environment in April

This all means we as Lions, Lions who Serve will

  • BELIEVE IN SERVICE
  • BELIEVE IN CLUB MEMBERS
  • BELIEVE IN NURTURING OUR FUTURE
  • BELIEVE IN LEADERSHIP
  • BELIEVE IN PROJECTING OUR IMAGE
  • BELIEVE IN GIVING BACK

If all of this does not excite you, I do not know what will. What does all

this mean? TEAMWORK Lions, Together Everyone Achieves More, there is no "I" in "we".

We, as Lions, CAN work together to make this possible.

We, as Lions, WILL work together to make this possible!

We, as Lions, do believe in the work we do.

I am excited about all the training that has gone on and will be still going on in our District getting you, the leadership of District 35-I, ready for your positions, thanks to the help of our GLT Leader Lion Penny Gregrich, PDG, and her TEAM of instructors. We had Lions from another District driving to be trained in our District. This says a lot about the job that is being done here in District ONE! Thank you Lion John Carbaugh, IPDG, for allowing the Lions of this great District to get off to a good start.

I am looking forward to returning and sharing what I have learned while in Seattle and to visit each and every club and Lion, planting trees in my travels in this wonderful District. Thank you Lions for allowing me the opportunity to serve, SERVE YOU! Now, let's get out there and let's get

to work and have some fun while doing so.

I BELIEVE - ONE TEAM, ONE MISSION - WE SERVE!

From:

DG Dean Hess

Message:

Hello Lions of 35-I from Seattle, Lion Judy and I are having a great time in Seattle. We are meeting Lions from around the world, making new Lion friends, seeing Lions from the Multiple District and much more. The training has been excellent and rewarding. I hope you are ready for the International President's Theme "I Believe". Lions, the air is full of Lionism, to see other Districts, how things are working around the world is awesome and electrifying. The roles of Lions and LCIF are so important to the world. We see that Lions can break barriers in all areas of our world. We see Lions from Russia and other countries and know they are our friends. Just open your eyes to what Lions can do. Lions of 35 - I, we have so much more we can do by increasing our membership and bring more service to individuals and our communities. The International Show gave us such a wide variety in music, our one and only Karen Taylor Good performed. Believe in yourself, believe in Lions. We can do so much more as a group than an individual can. Lion Judy and I have attended so many good seminars. We will be bringing many good ideas for our District. Go Lions! Remember, "We Serve" and Lion Judy and I Believe in all of you Lions, the Lions of District 35-I. Let's kick off this year by believing in our mission, our vision and our objects and ethics. ONE TEAM - ONE MISSION

Message from the 1st Vice District Governor Bob Hilliard

My life partner, Partner in Service, and wife, Amy is truly my inspiration and strength.  Recently she asked me if there is anything in my memory that has been a steady inspiration in my life.  I have mulled over this for the past few days and seem to always come back to when, as a boy growing up on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in South Carolina, I remember my family always encouraging me to always treat others as I would like to be treated and if agreeing to do a job, do it to the best of my ability.  My Dad gave me this verse to live by:

"Once a task has just begun,

Never leave it 'til it's done,

Be the labor great or small,

Do it well or not at all."

Success demands that we pay the price excellence demands.  The price always calls for sacrifice.  Goals that are always and only self-serving never deliver satisfying success.   Our Motto - "WE SERVE". But remember, "NOT WITHOUT EACH OTHER."

I encourage each of you to remember that the team who pulls together will succeed and we need to forget  any problems or concerns from yesterday and come together today as a Great Lion Family so that WITH EACH OTHER, "WE SERVE."

Thomas Carlyle once said, "The block of granite which was an obstacle in the pathway of the weak, became a stepping-stone in the pathway of the strong."

The Collier County Sheriff's Office has a wonderful mentoring project

called "Build a Boat", to which the Everglades Lions Club contributed

the cost of a kit this year. The boat was built during one week in

June and was launched on the Friday. Today, it was in the Everglades

City Independence Day parade.

We are proud of our young people and their accomplishments.

"The Brandon Lions Club had its officers of 2011/2012 installed by PDG (Past District Governor) Kathy Walton with a Trinidad/Tobago dinner meal of "wrapped" shrimp & chicken. Assisting PDG Walton was Zone Chairman, Robert Fulks. President Elect Lion Patricia Stone's message is not about the president, but the energy/actions/contributions of every Lion member."

KidSight

Are you...Interested in service? Interested in helping children? Interested in vision preservation? Interested in being part of a new Lions project that helps to preserve the vision in children?

KidSight has been a successful program in several Multiple Districts.  Lions have screened over a million children.  Thousands of children have been detected with vision problems early enough for treatment, thus preventing a lifetime of monocular vision loss caused by amblyopia.

With a generous grant from the Children's Miracle Network, the start of a KidSight program in MD-35 is underway.  MD-35 Lions Sight Conservation chairman, Dr. Howard Freedman, and Tammy Johnson, trainer of KidSight programs throughout the US, are working together to share the program with any and all MD- 35 Lions interested in participating.

The program will be presented at zone meetings scheduled in Sandestin on July 18th and Ocala on July 28th.  If you are interested in learning about the program and would like to attend a presentation or schedule your own, please call or e-mail Tammy Johnson ((352) 334-1769; This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
