“Lion of the Year" 2011 Majorie Shivel

 lion of the year 260

For more than forty years, a Bonita Springs woman has quietly and purposefully served her community day after day at the Bonita Springs Lions Club.

Until recently she was one of Bonita Springs' unsung hometown heroes.
This month that changed when Marjorie Shivel was recognized with the prestigous, "Lion of the Year" award for 2011.

Bonita Springs Lions Club President Bob Hilliard made the presentation and considers Marjorie Shivel the ideal example of the Lions' motto, " We Serve."
Reliability and kindness summarize the words most used to describe Marge Shivel by the people who know her well.
When asking some of them of their impression of her, each said “Do you have a couple of hours?” One man even said,
“It would take a book to describe all that Marjorie Shivel means to Bonita Springs." Born in Louisville, KY, in 1936,
Marjorie Crowe Shivel’s childhood memories bring a smile to her face as she recalls loving Christian parents whose nurturing home taught her the values of service to others.

Learning to bake as a young girl in her mother’s kitchen, Marge's love of baking continues to bless all of the volunteers at the Lions Club Thrift Store weekly where she has volunteered forty plus hours a week for so many years. Pastor Kevin Bradley who serves as one of the volunteers describes these treats as a highight of his week. His wife Kathy admits Marge's Potato Chip Cookie recipe is a must-have. More than fifty years ago, Marjorie met her husband Ken at Office Equipment Company in New Albany, Indiana where they both worked. Marjorie shyly concedes it was love at first sight. Ken brought his new bride to Bonita Springs for their honeymoon to visit Ken’s grandfather. During their brief visit, she learned why Ken loved Bonita Springs. They promptly moved here where they started their family and raised their children, Belinda Shivel Coles and Keith Shivel, along the idyllic shores of the Imperial River and the Gulf of Mexico. In what was then the tiny tranquil town of Bonita Springs, the Shivels relished the fact that the town usually rolled up its carpet at sunset. As their new hometown grew the couple’s family grew as well in the company of the Bonita Springs Lions. The couple now enjoys the company of two granddaughters, two grandsons and one great-grandson. Impressed with the mission of the Lions Club, Ken soon joined the Bonita chapter charted in 1962. He eventually presided as President in 1969 and eventually served as District Governor. Ever his faithful wife and companion, Marjorie served with Ken for 33 years, as part of the Bonita Springs Lions Club Women’s Auxiliary, and then as a full-fledged Lion when the Auxiliary merged with the Bonita Lions Club. From the beginning in what started as a small donated trailer and later grew to what is now the popular Bonita Lions Thrift store, Lion Marge has served regularly. She recalls how they had to work into the night to sort donated items. She has served in the Thrift store for more than forty years alongside her brother and thrift store manager, Raymond Crowe. In 1972, Marge helped start the Lions Pancake Breakfast washing dishing, serving and "doing whatever had to be done," she said. Forty years later Marge is still seen at the breakfast with her mother-in-law who nevers misses a one. Marge also helped Father Foley of St. Leo's Catholic Chruch and other local pastors and ministers who started with the Lions Lions Club almost 30 years ago. Marge is modest in recalling her years of service which also include being the first women to have served on the Executive Board of Directors of the Florida Lions Camp started in Lake Wales in 1972 and assisting husband Ken with many bluegrass festivals and performances presented by the club. She currently presides on the Board of Directors for the Bonita Springs Lions Club, and also volunteers at the Lions Club dinner meetings twice each month. When asked why Marge became a Lion she quickly responded, “I enjoy doing my part for our community. Ken and I participated in most of the service projects of our club. We also worked in the Chuck Wagon, which used to sell picnic foods during community activities and outings." Marjorie values the Lions' comraderie of service-orientated people and its ability to provide a myriad of ways to serve the needs of the citizens of Bonita Springs, Southwest Florida and their mission worldwide. Through a variety of programs promoting awareness, understanding and acceptance, Bonita Springs Lions Club raises over $250,000 a year, awarding college scholarships, eye surgeries and free eyeglasses at the Bonita Lions Eye Clinic as well as supporting various local charities, and the needs of the mentally and medically impaired worldwide. Marge's favorite memory of her years of service as a Lion centers on the story of a young girl with an eye infection that threatened to end the child’s life. Due to the efforts of the Bonita Springs Lions Club, this child received the medical attention she needed in a Miami hospital. As a student, this same young lady revisited the Lions Club and thanked the members for their care and support during this trying time in her life and how she now looked forward to a promising future. Another highlight of Marjorie’s volunteer career brings a twinkle to her eyes, when she describes attending Lions Club International Conventions around the world. The Shivels usually take their yearly family vacations to these exotic places, and Marjorie savors the memory of all of the new people they have met over the years. In addition to filling the role of supportive wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, homemaker and Lion volunteer, Marjorie is also a committed and focused employee of Dollar General, where she is a respected for the team spirit she shares at the local store. Our city can be proud to count this vivacious and generous lady as one of our own. We sing the praises of Marjorie Shivel for her “Lion of the Year” award and her more than forty years of service. She is one of Bonita Springs' hometown heroes.

Lions rap video "Rockin' the Vest."

Lions and non-Lions everywhere are talking about the newly-debuted Lions rap video "Rockin' the Vest." In the video, real Lions members dance and sing along with an original rap song while they perform community service. Our hope is to make this rap video go viral, to expose as many people as we can to the great work that we do and excite them about serving their communities. Partnered with four new and fun public service announcements, this rap video is designed to have potential members view us in a new way.

Do you rock the vest?  Watch the Lions "Rockin' the Vest" rap video and help us spread the word by sharing this video with your club members, friends, family and neighbors.

Thank you for helping our Lions rap go viral.

July Newsletter

Wow, how time flies! When you receive this, Lion Judy and I will be in

Seattle, meeting great Lions and learning even more about Lions than

I have learned over many years of serving. What an honor and I could

not be more proud for us to represent District 35-ONE!

During 2011-2012, I, as your DG, will be encouraging each one of you

Lions to follow the "I Believe" International program, to believe in and

take action to strengthen our membership by caring for fellow members

as if they are family by:

Maximizing the use of our GMT TEAM!

Increasing the number of clubs. We currently have 55. We lost 7.

Have all clubs gain a minimum of 2 members giving us an increase of 110, resulting in a net growth of 50+ Lions (minus the moves and deaths). We currently have 1478 members. Males - 880, Females - 598.

Have every club below 20 members bring membership up to 20 members.

Increase Family Membership in clubs - Enact a "My Club, My Family"

philosophy.

Increase Family units in clubs. We currently have 182 with 194 paying half dues.

Increase women membership in clubs. We currently have 598, that is 282 less than men.

Every new Lion will go thru a District Orientation Program by Lion Bob Fulks at Cabinet Meetings.

All clubs will do a exit interview of why Lions leave their club. Our

Retention Chair Lion Bob Woomer, PDG, will be monitoring this and

will get a copy from clubs dropping members.

We will believe and succeed in expanding our service to new heights,

propelled by a special campaign to plant one million trees.

We will believe in nurturing our future by involving more young people and Leos in all that we do.

Believe that one person can make a difference.

Believe that the entire world can be changed when we come together as Lions.

Believe that changing a life - or the world - starts with each one of us.

In this 2011-2012 Lions year, we will also:

  • Increase and improve communication between individual Lions,  the Clubs and the District by our Cabinet Secretary Lion Norma Jean Andrews, PDG, our District newsletter by Lion Cathy Walton, PDG

  • Increase socail networking by Clubs and the District not only have websites, but also Facebook pages by our ITW Chair David Skillin

  • Have increase of 10% in the Peace Poster contest by Lion Amy    Hilliard, PIS

  • We will have a Crusader winner from District I by Lions Bev Kruger and David Skillin

  • We will have a Pilot winner from District I by Lion Suzy Stathus, CC

  • Participate in the Global Service Action Campaigns

Engage our Youth in August

Share the vision in October

Relieve hunger in December and January

Protect our Environment in April

This all means we as Lions, Lions who Serve will

  • BELIEVE IN SERVICE
  • BELIEVE IN CLUB MEMBERS
  • BELIEVE IN NURTURING OUR FUTURE
  • BELIEVE IN LEADERSHIP
  • BELIEVE IN PROJECTING OUR IMAGE
  • BELIEVE IN GIVING BACK

If all of this does not excite you, I do not know what will. What does all

this mean? TEAMWORK Lions, Together Everyone Achieves More, there is no "I" in "we".

We, as Lions, CAN work together to make this possible.

We, as Lions, WILL work together to make this possible!

We, as Lions, do believe in the work we do.

I am excited about all the training that has gone on and will be still going on in our District getting you, the leadership of District 35-I, ready for your positions, thanks to the help of our GLT Leader Lion Penny Gregrich, PDG, and her TEAM of instructors. We had Lions from another District driving to be trained in our District. This says a lot about the job that is being done here in District ONE! Thank you Lion John Carbaugh, IPDG, for allowing the Lions of this great District to get off to a good start.

I am looking forward to returning and sharing what I have learned while in Seattle and to visit each and every club and Lion, planting trees in my travels in this wonderful District. Thank you Lions for allowing me the opportunity to serve, SERVE YOU! Now, let's get out there and let's get

to work and have some fun while doing so.

I BELIEVE - ONE TEAM, ONE MISSION - WE SERVE!

Message:

Hello Lions of 35-I from Seattle, Lion Judy and I are having a great time in Seattle. We are meeting Lions from around the world, making new Lion friends, seeing Lions from the Multiple District and much more. The training has been excellent and rewarding. I hope you are ready for the International President's Theme "I Believe". Lions, the air is full of Lionism, to see other Districts, how things are working around the world is awesome and electrifying. The roles of Lions and LCIF are so important to the world. We see that Lions can break barriers in all areas of our world. We see Lions from Russia and other countries and know they are our friends. Just open your eyes to what Lions can do. Lions of 35 - I, we have so much more we can do by increasing our membership and bring more service to individuals and our communities. The International Show gave us such a wide variety in music, our one and only Karen Taylor Good performed. Believe in yourself, believe in Lions. We can do so much more as a group than an individual can. Lion Judy and I have attended so many good seminars. We will be bringing many good ideas for our District. Go Lions! Remember, "We Serve" and Lion Judy and I Believe in all of you Lions, the Lions of District 35-I. Let's kick off this year by believing in our mission, our vision and our objects and ethics. ONE TEAM - ONE MISSION

Message from the 1st Vice District Governor Bob Hilliard

My life partner, Partner in Service, and wife, Amy is truly my inspiration and strength.  Recently she asked me if there is anything in my memory that has been a steady inspiration in my life.  I have mulled over this for the past few days and seem to always come back to when, as a boy growing up on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in South Carolina, I remember my family always encouraging me to always treat others as I would like to be treated and if agreeing to do a job, do it to the best of my ability.  My Dad gave me this verse to live by:

"Once a task has just begun,

Never leave it 'til it's done,

Be the labor great or small,

Do it well or not at all."

Success demands that we pay the price excellence demands.  The price always calls for sacrifice.  Goals that are always and only self-serving never deliver satisfying success.   Our Motto - "WE SERVE". But remember, "NOT WITHOUT EACH OTHER."

I encourage each of you to remember that the team who pulls together will succeed and we need to forget  any problems or concerns from yesterday and come together today as a Great Lion Family so that WITH EACH OTHER, "WE SERVE."

Thomas Carlyle once said, "The block of granite which was an obstacle in the pathway of the weak, became a stepping-stone in the pathway of the strong."

The Collier County Sheriff's Office has a wonderful mentoring project

called "Build a Boat", to which the Everglades Lions Club contributed

the cost of a kit this year. The boat was built during one week in

June and was launched on the Friday. Today, it was in the Everglades

City Independence Day parade.

We are proud of our young people and their accomplishments.

KidSight

Are you...Interested in service? Interested in helping children? Interested in vision preservation? Interested in being part of a new Lions project that helps to preserve the vision in children?

KidSight has been a successful program in several Multiple Districts.  Lions have screened over a million children.  Thousands of children have been detected with vision problems early enough for treatment, thus preventing a lifetime of monocular vision loss caused by amblyopia.

With a generous grant from the Children's Miracle Network, the start of a KidSight program in MD-35 is underway.  MD-35 Lions Sight Conservation chairman, Dr. Howard Freedman, and Tammy Johnson, trainer of KidSight programs throughout the US, are working together to share the program with any and all MD- 35 Lions interested in participating.

The program will be presented at zone meetings scheduled in Sandestin on July 18th and Ocala on July 28th.  If you are interested in learning about the program and would like to attend a presentation or schedule your own, please call or e-mail Tammy Johnson ((352) 334-1769; This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
